Navigating Differences in Faith
Differences in belief are natural and can lead to healthy discussion—if approached with humility and without hostility. While we each hold firm convictions, expressing them respectfully opens the door for growth and understanding. This should be conducted in a safe and stable environment.
Faith and Criticism
It's painful when criticism strikes at our identity, especially when it's about our relationship with God. For believers in Jesus Christ, being told we are wrong by God can feel deeply unsettling. Why would a person do this to us? Scripture reminds us that our spiritual growth is guided by the Holy Spirit, not by harsh or condemning words.
Testing Teachings with Discernment
We are encouraged to test teachings, which includes the fruit they bear—peace, love, and spiritual maturity—just as we'd test the temperature of water. Trusted Christian teachers and principles from Scripture help guide us. Jesus teaches us to prioritise love within this family and extend it to others. Human beings are shaped by biology, psychology, life experience, intellect, memory, spirituality and more. God wants us to grow in wholeness. We draw from current and past generations of insight and experience.
Relationship Over Religion
There is a vital difference between having a religious life and truly knowing Jesus. A person may speak eloquently or hold leadership, yet lack spiritual fruit. Jesus said His sheep know His voice—discernment helps us recognise what is truly from Him and what is not. There is support for the development of right thinking and spiritual experience, such as the Bible, Church, fellowship, scriptures, known Christian authored books.
Challenges in the Church
Church structures may sometimes prioritise competing personal or organisational control over spiritual truth. Some believers face genuine harm from systems that elevate religious form over relationship. God may lead people away from such situations into places of healing and growth, in His timing and care.
